My name is Alec Schenning and I am very honored to be selected as a finalist for the UK

P&I Club, Investing in A Safer Tomorrow Competition. I am from Fallston, Maryland, USA and graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in International Maritime Business (IMB) this past March. Due to my high school Advanced Placement (AP) credits and an overload of summer and winter classes, I graduated a year and a half early. This of course has made my college journey a bit unique.

At the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, I have had the opportunity to serve as the International Maritime Business (IMB) Operations Officer, fourth class Student Government Association (SGA) President, SGA Executive Secretary, SGA Executive Vice President, be a squad leader, obtain my Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license, play baseball and be a member of the Ship Operations Cooperative Program (SOP).

In the Summer of 2018, I was an Intern with the United States Maritime Administration’s (MARAD) International Activities Department in Washington D.C. where I constructed briefing materials for the Maritime Administrator’s bilateral trade talks. This past winter I was an Intern with Military Sealift Command as a Junior Supply Officer onboard the USNS Amelia Earhart. While on board, I helped with the financial, accounting, and inventory management of the ships supply system, and was able to visit Hawaii, Guam, and Japan.

Throughout my sophomore (second year) winter, I had the pleasure of travelling to Singapore on an Experiential Learning trip, which provided me with an invaluable opportunity to explore the vast world of shipping. Further afforded the opportunity to travel, this past October myself and my partner Ian Costello traveled to Barcelona, Spain where we presented on autonomous shipping at the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) annual conference. This experience was another rewarding experience, as we were able to meet maritime students from across the globe and share our visions as to what the future of shipping will look like.

I hope to put a close to my Massachusetts Maritime Academy travels by joining you in London this Summer, where we may once again conduct conversation with some of the greatest minds in the industry in an attempt to make our industry safe for all those in it. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Alec Schenning

My name is Ian Costello, and I am beyond blessed to have had the opportunity to participate in the finals for the Investing In A Safer Tomorrow Competition. I am from Medway, Massachusetts, USA, and am currently a Senior (4th Year) Cadet at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in International Maritime Business (IMB).

My time at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy has been phenomenal. I have had the opportunity to travel to six different countries, experience the vast cultures of each, serve as the International Maritime Business (IMB) Rate, and now IMB Operations Officer. In that time I have given speeches across the globe regarding autonomous shipping, port development, and business management. I am an active member of the Regiment of Cadets, as well as the IMB Faculty, meaning that I am the student in charge of the entire IMB program, With this leadership opportunity, I have been able to help push our small program into a very successful future.

I am different from many students in that I have already established a successful professional life. In 2014, after two years of work at Burger King and the YMCA, I was offered a job working with Mercedes-Benz. At 17 years old, I took this job and have now been with the company for almost five years. In that time, I have received two promotions which have allowed me to not only pay for my entire education, but also explore my potential. Additionally, I have spent time working with Rolls-Royce Defense, and just recently accepted a position with Raytheon Integrated Defense as post-graduation employment.

In March of 2018, I opened my first company, CN Royale, LLC. This was a company specializing in professional menswear, but unfortunately I closed it less than a year later due to poor returns. I was very happy for this, because it taught me many lessons. In August of 2018, I opened my second company, Forge Entertainment Group, LLC. This firm specializes in the management and consultation of entertainment-based companies, and I am proud to say that it has been a tremendous success.

Now that you know more about me, I hope to further our relationship by having the chance to meet you all in London this Summer. I believe that the meeting of our minds will greatly benefit the maritime industry, and make it safer for all.

Sincerely,

Ian Costello
